Case study:

NIBRT Virtual Academy

Background

National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT) and Boston Consulting Group worked with Avatar Academy to develop training material for a complex manual process in a realistically simulated cleanroom environment. The pilot was presented to Pharmaceutical leaders as part of the Biopharma 4.0 alliance in October 2019. The application was seen as “One of the best use cases for Virtual Reality ever seen” , James Morton, Industry 4.0 Director at BCG.

NIBRT worked very closely with Avatar Academy in building a hugely valuable Virtual Reality training simulation of a complex manual process… Their knowledge of the technology is first class and they are on board to give assistance every step of the way.

Approach

For this project, the team focused on producing a single course procedure for virtual reality. The course was developed over the course of 20 weeks, with production split into three stages.

Application Design

The team captured a demonstration of the procedure using 360° cameras mounted on the trainee’s heads and regular cameras to get the trainee’s body movement and placement in the scene. This formed the basis for the narrative, outlying how the application would function.

Concept art, user interface designs and storyboards were compiled together into a design document for the clients approval.

Development

Simultaneously, 3D modelling, texturing, particle effects, animations and the code structure commenced, to avoid bottlenecks as the project progressed. Using photo, video and scan reference, a 1:1 representation of Nibrt’s inoculum lab was created and populated with the relevant content.

Delivery

The application was put through vigorous user testing in order to find and classify any bugs or issues. With every known bug logged, each one of these were dealt in order of importance. With user testing completed, a version was shared with the client for external testing. With minor issues solved, the application moved to release
